Meet Our Cantor

Introducing
our
High Holy Days
chazzan:
Ted Prosnitz

This September, CHAZZAN TED PROSNITZ joins Rabbi Engelmayer on the bima for the High Holy Days.

It took only one meeting to convince a unanimous Cantor Search Committee that Chazzan Prosnitz was a “perfect fit” fit for our shul. He is not the kind of chazzan who insists on giving concerts from the pulpit. He believes, as we do, in involving the congregation.

One story will serve as an example. Several years ago on Rosh Hashanah, an elderly gentleman, a Holocaust survivor, approached him and thanked him for making him feel as he had as a child at home in Europe. At the same service, a young American couple with a young child approached him to say they had planned to attend the service only briefly, but had stayed because they “enjoyed” it so much.

“Reaching multiple generations like that makes my heart sing,” Chazzan Prosnitz tells us.

Chazzan Prosnitz is a graduate of the H.L. Miller Cantorial School and College of Jewish Music at The Jewish Theological Seminary of America. In addition to being invested as a cantor, he received his Masters of Sacred Music. Ted was also awarded the Chazzan Israel Weiser Prize for excellence in nusach. (Nusach is a comprehensive knowledge of the structure of the liturgy, the thematic chants that are appropriate for specific sections of each service, and a full understanding of the prayers that make up each service.)

Ted, as he prefers to be called, was born and raised in Hackensack, New Jersey. Educated in public school, he also attended the religious school at Hackensack Hebrew Institute.

After college (University of Rochester) and graduate school (University of Michigan) he worked as a hospital administrator (Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions). But his heart brought him back to the family retail business, PROZYS ARMY NAVY. A few years ago, his congregation asked Ted to be Ba'al Shacharit for the High Holy Days. As shaliach tzibbur, “the messenger of the congregation” (the title given to whoever leads the prayers), he had a life-changing experience, that set him on the path to become a cantor. Mindful of his parents, Milton and Mary (z''l), he has earned the title Hachazzan Tuvye Yaakov ben Moshe u-Miriam. Ted and his wife Karen have three children—Jared, Reyna, and Rachel.

Ted is looking forward to meeting one and all at TICC | CHY. You can get a chance to meet him on Shabbat morning, June 26, when he will be helping Rabbi Engelmayer lead Shabbat services.
