Shabbat Eco-Candles: The Jewish way to light Shabbat candles
Rav Zutra said: He who covers an oil lamp or uncovers a naphtha lamp [in order to make them burn faster] violates the [Torah commandment] against wanton destruction. (Babylonian Talmud tractate Shabbat 67b)
Nearly 2,000 years ago, the Talmud, basing itself on Torah law, prohibited burning fossil fuels with abandon. The reason: Fossil fuels are not a renewable resource. Forcing them to burn unnecessarily hot means burning more fuel than is needed for the purpose (in the specific case, to allow Shabbat candles to burn for an appropriate amount of time). While this law has far-ranging implications, a good place to start is where the g'mara started—with Shabbat candles.
What's wrong with regular Shabbat candles?
1. They're a byproduct of gasoline refining and may be come from foreign oil.
2. They give off numerous toxins and carcinogens while burning.
3. They send lots of soot into the air that can damage your walls and furnishings.
4. They're not biodegradable or water soluble. Cleaning up spilled wax is difficult--especially from carpets.
5. They burn much hotter, a lot faster and more unevenly, often causing the candle to burn down the center only.
Why are Shabbat Eco-Candles the better choice?
1. They're made from soy beans grown in the U.S.
2. They're a renewable source of energy that supports the American farmer.
3. They're clean-burning and soot-free. They do not pollute the air.
4. They leave no waxy residue to clean up.
5. They're easy to use for home or travel.
6. They're made with lead-free wicks and burn over 3 hours-with no wasted wax!
