Shabbat Morning Services begin at 9:30 a.m. and end around 12:30 p.m. While a three-hour service sounds daunting (even to our rabbi), it really is our choice. We enjoy singing a lot during davening and that takes time. We enjoy the Torah study during the Torah reading--and sometimes we keep the discussion going for a while. And we prefer it when the rabbi gives a sermon, regardless of how long a Torah reading there was in a given week. (We do not always get our way.) The Torah Service, by the way, is the centerpiece of our services. It begins around 10:30 a.m. and ends at around 11:40 a.m., usually followed by the sermon. On most Shabbatot, services are followed by a kiddush and luncheon, complete with spirited singing, excellent conversation and a strong sense of community. We do not have regular Friday Evening services, preferring instead that families and friends spend the evening together enjoying a leisurely Shabbat dinner. Several times during the year, however, we do sponsor Daven'n'Dine Friday Nights, which begin with evening services, followed by a communal dinner. |
